Confronting Glencore: People Fighting Corporate Power
At this year's Annual Gathering, we will be joined by members of the Espinar community, whose struggle to protect their land, health and human rights illustrates the need for international solidarity. For over 40 years, the Espinar community in the southern highlands of Peru has faced the health, environmental, social and cultural impacts of copper mining operations.

People in Espinar are calling on the international community to back their campaign for effective due diligence legislation in Europe and in Great Britain. As part of their European speaking tour, we will be hearing from:

Esmeralda Larota Umasi
a leader from the community of Huancané Bajo, department of Espinar, Cusco province. She is a member of the Association of Women for the Defence of their Territory and Culture K’ana, AMDETEK. She has been affected by toxic metals found in her body, as she lives in a zone that is heavily affected due to its proximity to the tailings dam of Ccamacmayo. The message she brings is: “we are not anti-development, we are not anti-mining, we want companies to be responsible, because we are human beings, we have the right to life, that is why I ask the citizens of Europe to promote a due diligence law to demand that their companies respect human rights in places such as where I live with my family. I also want to live like you, with rights”.

Karem Lisseth Luque Ticona
is the coordinator of collective rights and the environment at the Cusco-based organization Derechos Humanos sin Fronteras, DHSF. She specialises in environmental and human health and coordinates the Technical Table of Human and Environmental Health. She has been working in DHSF for over 6 years. During that time, she has accompanied activities of environmental monitoring and the registering of people affected by toxic metals. She also provides advice to communities and grassroots organizations in issues regarding collective and environmental rights.
